SEATTLE – Amazon has rolled out a new augmented reality tool called Room Decorator that lets shoppers add dozens of products to a room as well as being able to use the technology when they are away from home by saving AR snapshots of rooms to use later.

The e-commerce giant said the feature is available across thousands of furniture products, including many offered by some of its third-party sellers. The function can be used by clicking the “View in Your Room” button, which appears under eligible furniture products in the Amazon shopping app for iOS and desktop web browsers.

While they are using the AR features, shoppers will be offered suggestions of additional products based on the item they initially added. Amazon then invites shoppers to add those new items to the room scene.

TechCrunch reports that the products in the AR view are shown both in scale and in high-definition to limit any misinformation about how they look in reality.

Shoppers are also able to save the room images in the iOS app, which lets them save the image of their room in a new section in the customer’s Amazon account.

Amazon said the new experience has been under development for more than a year and leverages Apple’s ARKit for some of its AR technology integrations. The new room decorator feature has launched across 50% of the Amazon iOS mobile app install base in the U.S. Over the next few weeks, the feature will roll out to the rest. The feature won’t be available to Android users until later this year.

Other home furnishings retailers such as Wayfair and Ikea have also developed similar AR tools to help customers visualize products in their home before committing to a purchase.
