MONTREAL – Motion and stationary upholstery manufacturer Elran Furniture has reopened its 235,000-square-foot factory here.

“We are very excited to be able to get back to the business of making furniture” said Elran President and CEO Eric Abecassis. “This has been a hard time for everyone; we look forward to having our team back in the building and fulfilling the needs of our loyal customers.”

Phase one of resumed operations began May 11 at 50% capacity for now, since all employees have not yet returned in accordance with government back-to-work guidelines. Elran had a strong pre-COVID-19 backlog, and shipping times on those goods are being analyzed daily, with new orders shipping in six to eight weeks.

In recognition that the COVID-19 crisis is not yet over, Elran has put measures in place to protect all members of its team and meet the health and safety guidelines. Personal protective equipment and disinfectant products are available to all employees. Also the factory has been modified to accommodate social distancing where possible.

Elran is a 53-year-old, family-owned custom manufacturer of upholstered recliners and stationary furniture, located on the island of Montreal. The company offers a wide range of upholstery available in hundreds of fabrics and leathers, all manufactured at the company’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.

I’m Powell Slaughter, senior editor at Furniture/Today. I returned to the publication in January 2015 after nine years of writing about furniture retail strategies and best practices at a monthly magazine focusing on home furnishings retail operations. Prior to that, I spent 10 years with F/T covering wood furniture, the last five of those as case goods editor. Upon my return to F/T, I developed coverage of the logistical and service aspects of the furniture industry as well as following the occasional, home office and home entertainment categories. In April 2018 I took over the upholstery category, with responsibility for coverage of the fabric and leather stationary and motion upholstery, recliners and massage chair categories.
